The Wind-Down: Rachel Buntrock on Evening Rituals, Renovation Life & Non-Negotiable Bedding
From bathtime pyjamas and a glass of red with her husband, to the one bedset she'd choose for her own home, interiors and lifestyle content creator Rachel Buntrock — currently deep into her third renovation — talks us through what an ideal evening (and a truly good night's sleep) really looks like. Her answer: it starts with fresh sheets, and it's a work in progress.
Rachel Buntrock shares interiors, lifestyle and travel content, and is currently knee-deep in her third home renovation — an arts & crafts period family home. Mumma of three (including twins), and Creative Director at @designbysoapbox, she took a break from the reno dust to talk us through her evenings.
What does an ideal evening look like for you?
I don't get an ideal evening often, but if I did... All the children would be in bed. I'd have a bath or shower before putting on fresh pyjamas and then open a lovely bottle of red wine to enjoy with my husband while catching up on life. Then to bed, not too late and fresh bed sheets is an absolute must. Nothing beats it.
Is there a ritual you rarely skip before bed?
I don't have a big skincare routine but washing my face followed by serum and moisturiser is non-negotiable no matter how tired I am. Not exactly a ritual but it signifies the end of the day to me.
What does the last twenty minutes before sleep actually look like for you - and is there anything about it you'd like to change?
I'm such a night owl and I'm usually working, creating content, planning events or doing life admin until quite late so I tend to stop late and end up watching something at about 11pm to wind down as I can't go straight to bed. I need to claim back my evenings somehow but I cannot fit life into the daytime.
Which Sukun piece would you choose for yourself, and why?
Ooh fun question. It's all wonderful but if I had to choose one it would the Amalfi bedset. I love a good, simple white bedset and the ladder stitch adds a touch of elegance.
What do you love most about really good bedding?
The way it feels on your skin when you slip into bed. You can immediately tell the difference between good and bad bedding and good bedding always makes for a better nights sleep.
What's a non-negotiable for your home - the one thing that has to be right, no matter what (Home-cooked food, fresh flowers, a perfectly made bed, silence after 9pm. Whatever it is for you!)
Weekends absolutely have to evolved around big, home cooked, family meals. We always set the table and make a big fuss of cooking at the weekend and I want the children to grow up knowing there's always a place at the table for them and their loved ones.
