Bedtime Rituals: Micaela Sharp
For the latest instalment of Bedtime Rituals, we spoke to upholsterer, interior designer and author Micaela Sharp about slow evenings in the Spanish countryside: a sundowner on the terrace looking out over the Málaga hills, a screen-free red light mask, and why natural fibres matter as much in bed as they do in her wardrobe. Her pick from the Sukun edit is the Provence pillowcase, because "a frill or a ruffle gets me every time."
This time we spoke to Micaela Sharp, upholsterer, interior designer and author of Modern Upholstery, who now calls the Spanish countryside home. Follow her work at @micaelasharpdesign.
What does an ideal evening look like for you?
Now that I live in the Spanish countryside my evenings are usually very slow and peaceful. I love having a sundowner on my terrace while taking in the view of the Málaga hills and pottering around my vegetable patch.
Is there a ritual you rarely skip before bed?
My red light face mask has become a new staple and gives me 12 minutes to unwind, screen-free.
What does the last twenty minutes before sleep actually look like for you - and is there anything about it you'd like to change?
It normally involves putting my dog Nala to bed and then applying lots of moisturiser before I put on the air conditioning and crawl under the covers.
Which Sukun piece would you choose for yourself, and why?
I love the Provence pillowcases with a hint of colour around the ruffle. A frill or a ruffle gets me every time as it softens and adds more interest.
What do you love most about really good bedding?
We spend so much time in bed and natural fibres are so important to me with clothing, so they are equally (or even more) important for my bedding. They really help me sleep better, to be honest!
What's a non-negotiable for your home - the one thing that has to be right, no matter what (Home-cooked food, fresh flowers, a perfectly made bed, silence after 9pm. Whatever it is for you!)
For me a non-negotiable is individuality. Every home should celebrate who we are and our passions, travels, histories and precisely why we're different, in my opinion.
Micaela's love of natural fibres is exactly why we make every piece in 100% cotton sateen, OEKO-TEX certified and soft against the skin. Explore the Provence pillowcases she chose, or browse our bedding bundles.
