Cotton Sateen vs Percale: Which Bedding Is Right for You? (UK Guide)
Silky or crisp? The difference between sateen and percale bedding, what thread count really means and how to choose a cotton sateen duvet cover.
If you have ever stood in a bedding department wondering why two white duvet covers feel completely different, the answer is almost always the weave. Cotton sateen and cotton percale are the two most popular luxury bedding fabrics in the UK – both made from cotton, yet one feels silky and warm while the other feels crisp and cool. This guide explains the difference, what thread count really means, and how to choose the right cotton sateen duvet cover for the way you sleep.
Sateen vs percale at a glance

What is cotton sateen?
Cotton sateen is 100% cotton woven so that more threads float on the surface (typically four over, one under). Those floating threads reflect light, giving sateen its gentle sheen and silky feel. Not to be confused with satin, which is usually silk or polyester. For a deeper dive, read our guide: What Is Cotton Sateen? Everything You Need to Know.
What is cotton percale?
Percale uses a simple one-over, one-under grid weave. The result is a tighter, matte fabric with a crisp, "cool side of the pillow" feel. It is the classic choice of many boutique hotels and people who run hot at night.
Which is better: sateen or percale?
Neither is better – it depends on how you sleep:
- Choose sateen if you love soft, sink-in bedding, you tend to feel the cold, you want colours and prints to look vibrant, or you prefer bedding that looks smooth without much ironing.
- Choose percale if you sleep hot, love crisp sheets, or live somewhere warm.
For most UK homes – especially through autumn and winter – cotton sateen is the more comforting choice. It also shows colour beautifully, which is why we use it for so many of Sukun's colourful designs.
Does thread count matter?
Thread count is the number of threads woven into one square inch of fabric. Higher is not always better: very high numbers (800+) are often achieved with thin, multi-ply threads that can make fabric heavier and less breathable.
For cotton sateen, 300–400 thread count is the sweet spot – soft and substantial, yet still breathable. Quality of the cotton fibre and the finishing matter as much as the number on the label.
Our Candy Cane Collection, created with Atelier Raff, is 400 thread count, 100% cotton in a sateen weave.
How to choose a cotton sateen duvet cover
- Check it is 100% cotton. "Sateen" on its own can sometimes mean a cotton-polyester blend.
- Look for 300–400 thread count.
- Check the closure. Buttons or hidden poppers look neater than exposed zips.
- Consider buying a set. A duvet set or bundle with matching pillowcases and a fitted sheet is better value and gives a pulled-together look.
- Get the fitted sheet depth right. Measure your mattress – our Deep Fitted Sheet fits mattresses up to 34cm deep.
- Don't be afraid of colour. Sateen's sheen makes colour glow – a soft pastel or bold stripe can transform a bedroom far more than white.

How to care for cotton sateen bedding
- Wash at 30–40°C with a mild detergent; turn duvet covers inside out.
- Avoid bleach and heavy fabric softener – both can dull the natural lustre.
- Don't overload the machine; sateen needs room to rinse properly.
- Tumble dry low or line dry, and remove promptly – sateen drapes smoothly and often needs little ironing.
- If ironing, use a warm iron on the reverse.
Frequently asked questions
Is cotton sateen good for hot sleepers?
Sateen is breathable because it is cotton, but it feels slightly warmer than percale. Hot sleepers who love softness can still enjoy sateen, especially at a 300–400 thread count.
Does cotton sateen pill?
Good-quality long-staple cotton sateen resists pilling. Washing on a gentle cycle and avoiding abrasive items (like jeans) in the same load helps.
Is sateen the same as Egyptian cotton?
No. Sateen describes the weave; Egyptian cotton describes where the cotton fibre is grown. You can have Egyptian cotton in either a sateen or percale weave.
Why does my sateen bedding feel softer after washing?
Cotton sateen softens with each wash as the fibres relax – one reason it becomes more comfortable the longer you own it.
